Do you wear your birthstone?
Do you even know your birthstone?
Well this post talks about why you should be wearing your birthstone and the impact it can have.
Depending on which month you were born, will depend on the stone associated with your birth. Let’s take a quick look at how gemstones became associated with the months of the year.
Experts believe that birth stones can be dated back to the days of the Bible in the year 1250, Exodus 28. Moses, who had spent 40 days in the mountains, had received instructions to make a breastplate for Aaron, the High Priest of the Hebrews. The breastplate was to be adorned with 12 gemstones (representing the 12 tribes of Israel), later these 12 gemstones were assigned to the 12 zodiac signs and then later to the 12 months of the year.

Why wear your birthstones?
Of course it is obvious that we get most of our attributes from our genetics. If we have habits or likes, it is probable that we can trace it through our family. However it is believed that depending on when we were born in the year will make us prone to certain characteristics. Gemstones are believed to support the nature of your character and offer therapeutic benefit when wearing the stones. For example, as I write this in January, Garnet is the stone of the month and the red garnet is energising, which is a great stone for the beginning of the year, even if you are not born in January.
Gemstones have a significant role to play throughout history, however the gemstones themselves are often centuries old, making gemstone jewellery a tradition and a historical item of jewellery. Gemstones are perfect for handing down and just like the stones offer energy, they also absorb energy from the wearer so handing down a gemstone to someone you love is a really special gift.
Gemstones are known to bring all kinds of luck to the wearer. Having spent 8 years living in India and marrying into an Indian family, I have come to learn that gemstones are more than just pretty stones. Many Indians wear gemstones with pride and passion, knowing that a certain stone worn on a particular finger will support them financially, mentally and socially through their life. Adele, Victoria Beckham, Aishwarya Rai and Katy Perry are just a handful of celebrities who carry gemstones on them, whether in the shape of jewellery or tumble stones.
Ok, so a bit scientific but depending on the month you were born will depend on how far or near the planets were to the earth, which in turn reflects how strong the colours were that were omitted from the planets and then absorbed into earth. During the month of your birth, the earth experienced a deficiency of a certain colour and so your birthstone offers the colour you are most deficient in. I was born in December and the bright turquoise stone is December’s gem. It makes sense that the month with the least amount of sun is paired with a bright blue green stone. Wearing your gemstone is known to restore your cosmic colouring.
There is no denying that gemstones are unique and beautiful and make the perfect gift to someone. Finding designs that suit your style can be hard as some gemstone jewellery designs can seem a bit basic or incredibly pricy and slightly out of reach. Combining both design and stone is a lovely way of wearing jewellery that is both meaningful and beautiful. EsmeLoves is about combining both the passion and love for gemstone jewellery and the timeless style of beauty.
Jewellery is always a good conversation starter and what better conversation than talking about a gemstone and why you wear it. Even if the other person knows nothing about them, people are fascinated by gemstones and no doubt talking about yours can be a great conversation starter. You may quickly discover you were born in the same month, have similar interests and then who knows!
It is clear gemstones have stood the test of time and will always remain a fascinating topic. Wearing or gifting a gemstone to someone is a meaningful and thoughtful gift that will stand the test of time.
